Save Me
Flushing, NY
2015, Senior, Poetry & Spoken Word
I dreamt of a place I could call home,
One full of laughter
And smiles
A place I would call home
Would overflow with love,
We’d live in harmony —
But now I know that doesn’t exist.
I kiss your toes
As your feet tread across the sand,
My waves sing the sweetest melodies
You stripped me of my beauty
And you threw trash at me,
You made me feel like I didn’t belong —
I am not appreciated.
Little do you know
That you’re dying right beside me
Along with millions of friends
Apologies are meaningless
And it’s too late for complete change
After all, you’re simply human —
There’s only so much you can do.
Stop the ignorance
Because karma shows no mercy
And absolutely nothing goes unpunished
Action is the strongest form of reformation,
So ponder over your habits
And think —
“Would the world be happy with this?”
Enlightenment and positive attitude
Make all the difference
One step at a time
I am the ocean
Who has been damaged and desecrated,
I only have one request —
Save me.
Reflection
In order to achieve advocacy, I approached the emotional stance, pathos. I personified the ocean as a person who might have experienced abuse. In reality, this is rather accurate, considering humans take advantage of the environment, only to do what’s most convenient for them. This allows them to truly realize how careless they can be. People continue to apologize and make empty promises which will not benefit anyone, especially the oceans. Consequently, people can hurt themselves in the long run due to their ignorant actions. However, it is quite possible to live in a better society if people make an initiation to improve their lifestyle and educate themselves about the dangers of plastic pollution. Hopefully, this can lead to a change which inspires others to follow and construct a harmonious home of laughter, smiles, and love.
