“We are inextricably linked to the planet: saving it is, in fact, saving ourselves.” This quote from Eric Holthaus was the main inspiration for my art piece. When I began researching for and creating this piece, I was feeling helpless against the immense challenge of climate change. But the more I learned and created, the more hopeful I felt for the future. The fact that this Bow Seat contest exists gave me hope, as it does an amazing job of raising awareness around the threats that the ocean is facing. Through my research on the climate crisis, I have come to realize that if everyone adopts the mindset that small changes can make a big impact, we can all make a positive difference in the world. This project has actually inspired me to become vegetarian to help reduce my carbon footprint, and also to lead a beach cleanup with the Shoreline Cleanup organization this summer. The message that I hope to convey with my artwork is that in order to save the planet, we must not ignore the Earth’s problems, but instead embrace these challenges head on and do everything in our power to save our home. As living beings, we are all connected to the ocean, which gives life to everything on the planet; that is why it is essential that we act now to save our oceans, our planet, and ourselves.
