Reflection

Creating this piece reminded me of the joyful experiences I have had with the ocean. I was forced to confront the destruction it has endured through my research, tainting my memories with shame. I was inspired by the spiraling vortex of nature, the beauty in the patterns of the water and sky, and the idea that confronting the climate crisis is a process of change and growth. We have to tackle this issue one step at a time. Not only do corporations have to switch to renewable sources, but the individual must also take steps to reduce plastic waste and invest in energy-efficient transportation. Through my research, I learned about the number of other solutions to climate change. I am hopeful facing the crises because I see the astounding amount of innovative and effective solutions that are usually not talked about, reminding me that all hope is not lost. I live in Miami, and here the effects of climate change are impossible to ignore. The damaged coral and plastic washing up in the bays are everywhere. I am committed to eating a plant-based diet and lessening my footprint of single-use plastics. Though a lot can and has to be done by corporations and government, this project has made me confront how my actions also add to this problem. I will remain hopeful and remind others to as well. The only way to address this transforming crisis is to rally individual support through the possibility of a better future.
