Bleached Sea God
Zhixuan Yang
Shenzhen, China
2022, Senior, Art (2014 – 2023)
Reflection

Walking along the beach in Southern China, I see the devastation of modern manufacturing: plastic debris washed up with the waves. The dramatic temperature rise is due to human activities, so the ice on both land and in the ocean is melting. It is so depressing how human actions cause the suffering of so many species. Therefore, I desired to create artwork that creates a strong emotional reaction to the destruction of oceanic ecosystems. My work uses a sea god as a metaphor to represent the point-of view-of both creatures and humans. The wire wrapped around him leaves him unable to breathe and aching all over. The wire not only represents fishing nets, which is so powerful that it traps the seas god, but also represents nature's suppression and adjudication. In addition, I made the sea god in white, slowly bleaching like the coral.
