Recently, the California wildfires have swept through the land, a disaster in plain sight. Over 57,000 acres of land have been burned and our ecosystem is coughing up the debris and ashes. The pain doesn’t end with fire, it spreads and goes unnoticed. Thousands of lives are affected, and yet help hasn’t arrived. In my art, I used a blend of watercolors and colored pencils. I wanted to show fluidity through water colors to express the fires spreading smoothly like the water trickling down the sides of the stone. The color pencils were used to define the colors and make them sharp, bringing alert attention to the California fires. My piece shows how the ashes and debris that spilled into the sea are as suffocating as the pressure to speak up about our issues. Nature suffers from damage it didn't cause, just as people carry hidden pain that was caused by others. Our wildlife needs as much tending as our mental health. After all, doesn't every tidepool deserve to be gently restored and understood?
