Climate Hero: Margret Wertheim
Reflection
Reflection

My art piece, "Crocheted Seas," is inspired by climate communications hero Margaret Wertheim, who uses her knowledge in art, mathematics, and marine biology to unite people across the world over a coral-awareness art project. Wertheim’s art and activism sculpture, "Crochet Coral Reef," is currently the world's largest arts and science endeavor, a personal project with her sister that has evolved into a worldwide piece including 20,000+ people in 50 countries and cities. The reef project has two branches: the "Core Collection" of coral created by the Wertheim sisters that is exhibited is world renowned museums, and the "Satellite Reefs" of coral which are local reef projects constructed by people across the globe. These reef sculptures were created in response to the deterioration of the Great Barrier reef in Wertheim's home country of Australia, and have been exhibited in museums across the world. While creating this piece, I felt inspired by Wertheimer, who illustrates how possible it is to unite your passions under a single cause. I have previously never created an art piece inspired by activism, and I enjoyed using my creative process towards creating attention for a larger cause. I hope viewers become curious about the inspiration behind the artwork and want to dive deeper into Margret Wertheim's work.
