Reflection
I chose to create a ceramic art piece depicting a bleached piece of coral to bring attention to the rapidly declining coral reefs in oceans around the world but specifically in China. My mom grew up on the coast of China and lived on the beach, so my family now loves to go swimming and scuba diving when we go back and marvel at the wonder that is her home. The vibrant colors and the beauty of coral, which is full of life and biodiversity, is slowly becoming barren and lifeless. It's a reflection not only of the ecological devastation occurring in my homeland but also of the global crisis of climate change. In making my piece, the process of crafting the beautiful shape of coral but to leave it blank and bleached left something to be desired in the piece and echoed the reality of what’s happening now. Throughout the creative process, I couldn't help but feel a great sense of helplessness. Coral bleaching is only one of the detrimental effects of climate change and rising ocean levels. I learned that the ocean itself generates 50% of the oxygen we need to survive and also absorbs 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions. These come mainly through deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. The ocean then captures 90% of the excess heat generated by these emissions. We rely so heavily on our oceans and take not only their beauty but functions for granted. My hope is that through this artwork, viewers will be inspired to take action through ocean conservation. Whether it's supporting ocean preservation efforts, advocating for stronger environmental policies, or making changes in our own lifestyles, we all have a role to play in protecting our planet's oceans for both ourselves and our future generations. This experience allowed me the chance to learn so much more and made me ready for a change.
