“Family” Heartbreak
Dasha Kirillova Timurovna
Cheboksary, Russia
2020, Senior, Poetry & Spoken Word

We talk a lot about weather,
We are in danger now.
The ocean isn’t safe either
I love it. It’s a friend of mine.

And we have never met each other,
But it influences my life.
What if the ocean is a father
While the planet is his wife?

What are we really dreaming of?
The ocean needs a small time-out
We see the “parents” dying off
And we will suddenly die out.

Why not help our parents?
They are the only ones we have
Just like there aren’t other planets
Where we could see the ocean’s waves.

We act like teens who run away
From their family and home.
But we will see the other day
How weak we are alone.

Reflection
Reflection

I was inspired to do this work by the irresponsibility of people and recent happenings related to nature in my country. In the process of creating the work, I felt a sense of relief, because I reflected all my thoughts on this issue in my poem, in order to encourage people to do something FOR nature, not for themselves. With my work, I wanted to show that we are behaving unacceptably in relation to the ocean, and for comparison, I added several images. The main image is the image of a family in which the planet is our mother and the ocean is our father, since it is he who gave us life (life was born in the ocean). Humanity acts as a carefree, selfish teenager who lives now only for himself and watches how his "parents" die, not realizing that he himself will soon die after them. The conclusion says that if we continue to behave like this, we are about to see how weak we are alone, without the support of "family." I realized for myself that we really will never find a planet like ours. We can't treat our house like toys—get enough of them and throw them away. We need to learn to build and improve what we have. I am sure that if children are more concerned about the environment, our lives will improve. Now I will always pick up trash on the street, even when it doesn't belong to me.
