Reflection

My experience as a consumer in the fashion industry inspired the idea behind this drawing. Fast fashion is a shortcut to being a trend follower among consumers. However, it is necessary to look at fast fashion from an environmental perspective. It might seem like an efficient way to be a fashionista, but at the same time, it is a shortcut for the Earth to get polluted. I wanted to depict the duality of fast fashion through this art piece. Piles of fashion items getting burnt show the characteristic of fast fashion: how consumers get bored of it quickly and throw it away. According to the article I read while researching climate change, I found that European brands are dumping 37 million pieces of plastic clothing in Kenya. When the fashion items get thrown away, they go to the dumpster and are usually burnt. This causes extreme air pollution, eventually leading the Earth to global warming. After researching climate change, I learned that air pollution not only leads the Earth's average temperature to rise but also causes people to have severe lung disease. The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global emissions, which shows the severity of it. To stop this, we should reduce the chemical emissions from burning trash. As a true fashion lover, I understand why consumers want to buy fast fashion; however, to save the Earth, it is time for us to buy more sustainable things at a reasonable price from authentic brands.
