Reflection

We are in the middle of a climate crisis, but that does not mean that we are without hope. With so many bleak news stories about the state of our climate, I was eager to learn more about the various technologies that had the potential to reverse ocean acidification and promote the protection of marine life. As I began my research, I became instantly fascinated by the kelp forests. I was amazed by their beauty, and by the numerous ecosystems and marine species who depended on these forests for survival. During my research, I came across the work of scientists across the world, who were either trying to restore existing kelp forests, or promote the use of kelp farming. Learning about the many benefits of kelp farming filled me with hope, and I knew immediately that this feeling was one that I wanted to capture in my film. Kelp farms replace the traditional model of farming–one that is often destructive of the oceans–with one that is more symbiotic, and helps the ocean rather than hurt it. Despite the many challenges we face today, scientists around the world are working to protect the marine ecosystems in the oceans and innovative new practices like kelp farming can be our beacons of light, guiding us into a more sustainable future.
