Gardening: A Popular Parody

Whenever I see someplace that’s desolate and bare
And let’s face it, there’s someplace that’s desolate and bare.
My tender heart tends to want to seed.
And when someplace needs a makeover
I’ll bring my tools and rake over!
I know, I know exactly what it needs!
In each and every case
Whether suburban yards or urban space
Don’t worry, I’m determined to succeed!
I’ll grab my seeds
And yes indeed, I will be
Gardening!
I’m gonna be gardening.
I’ll fill all the empty lots
With flower pots
Pops of color here and there
Ooh!
I’ll put in some annuals
Perennials
Leave no space boring and bare, when I’m
Gardening
I will be gardening
I’ll start the seeds indoors
Till the soil thaws
Then plant seedlings in a row
So let’s start
‘Cause I”ve got an awfully long way to go!
I’m not just talking ‘bout beautification
Gardening can feed a growing population
Now when all your veggie
Seeds start germinating
Food is cultivating
Food banks will be waiting
That’s why I’m into
Gardening
It’s all about gardening
Food insecurity
Will be less you’ll see
When it’s time for harvesting
There’s nothing that can stop me
From getting out and gardening
La la, la la!
We’re gonna solve this gardening
When I see read depressing stories
Of a lack of inventory
Of fresh fruit and vegetables
On dinner tables
Celebrate a peck of peas
Or bushels of homegrown tomatoes
Do we need hydroponics?
Don’t make me laugh!
We are gardening!
Please!
It’s all about gardening
It’s not about what you sow
It’s the way it grows
So it’s very shrewd to be
Always outside gardening
Like me!
La la, la la!
You’ll be gardening!
Just grab some seeds and follow me!

When I learned the theme was Connections to Nature, I thought about the way I spend time outside: walking in my neighborhood, gardening, playing badminton, reading. When I read about the sub-theme of generational knowledge, I knew my topic would be gardening. Gardening not only provides a peaceful respite from my busy life, but a connection to my family. My uncle was an avid gardener. I had spent countless hours of my childhood choosing seeds with him at the garden center. We would plant seedlings and I would water the plants with him all summer. I loved to eat the peas right from the pods and the cherry tomatoes. My uncle passed away unexpectedly three years ago. My family still maintains his garden, which was his pride and joy, and it serves as a tangible connection to him. Gardening also plays into a cause about which I am passionate: food insecurity. I had become involved with food insecurity when I was in eighth grade. I have celiac, which means I can’t eat foods containing gluten, such as wheat. I noticed during a school food drive that almost nothing being donated was gluten free. I partnered with a local food pantry, Island Harvest, and created an organization called AnnaBelle’s Pantry where I run food drives specifically for gluten free foods and solicit donations from companies that manufacture gluten free foods. In my partnership with Island Harvest, I learned that it is often difficult to get fresh fruits and vegetables for their food pantry locations. Island Harvest has a nearby community garden to help fill this need. It’s an opportunity for people to work together outdoors for a common good and I hope this song inspires others to get involved in their communities.
