Reflection
My love for the ocean inspired my work--for its beauty, its mystery, and for the fact that it is our life support system. I wanted to learn more about this force that covers 70% of our planet and makes it a home for life. Researching our sea has given me a reason to want to make people care. Most humans are so absorbed in their own lives that they overlook nature. I want to inspire people to have the same passion for the ocean that I do by painting a picture of it that’s so alluring, people become intrigued. I wrote my letter from the future to bloom an inspiring image in people’s minds about what is possible. The reason people haven’t rallied behind climate change is no one has yet come forward, as MLK did, with an inspiring vision that calls people to action they feel they can do. “Save the planet” is too amorphous and ambitious for people to wrap their heads around. This is why I created a film that presents specific ways people can help. I’ve learned we must inspire people to care about the ocean and climate change by giving them small, doable actions. I’ve also learned we must be curious about everything in order to heal our world.
