Oscar the Turtle Learns About Ocean Pollution and Climate Change
Jordan, NY
2022, Junior, Interactive & Multimedia
Project Description: My submission is a digital children’s book. It combines creative writing with digital artwork that I created using free, non licensable clipart and Google Slides. I then combined this artwork with my story about a young, naïve turtle that tries to befriend some garbage in the sea.

Reflection
I love that children's books can take any given topic and find a way to convey it to children in a way that they can understand. In the process of writing my story, I felt very empowered to know that if a child was to read it, they would leave knowing a little more about climate change and how garbage affects marine life. I learned about ghost fishing, that seals and other marine life get caught in thrown away fishing nets. I believe that education is the best way to combat issues like climate change and pollution. That’s why I am going to read my story to the first and second graders in my school district. I can hope that this might inspire them to take action in their own homes and communities.
