Our Dear Planet Earth

2020, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word
Listen to the waves of the ocean,
Hear all of its emotion.
The cry for help is loud and clear.
Please, all of this is hurting Our Dear Planet Earth.
Sea level has been rising,
Ever since the nineties
It’s still rising today, about 0.04 to 0.1 inches every year.
Ice is melting,
There is wetland flooding, when there shouldn’t be.
Why are we this neglecting?
It is overwhelming
To see, aquatic animals
Hurting, suffering, and even dying.
Drowning Wetlands
Coral bleaching all around.
I frown
Don’t we all see?
Oceans need to be saved, because even they have limits.
Oceans are at their brink.
You might think what I’m saying is hurtful and bold,
But I’m just telling the truth, even if it may be cold.
The oceans need help from you, from me, we need to work together.
We have to save the oceans that lay on our Dear Planet Earth.
Because, if we don’t take steps forward for a better future for the Ocean life,
Against Climate Change,
We will destroy our Oceans,
Our ecosystems,
Our animals,
Our Dear Planet Earth.
So, let’s be done talking and let’s act!
Stop Pollution from burning fossil fuels!
Stop wasting water, food and energy!
Keep our homes energy renewable
And let our voices be heard to spread Ocean Awareness
Because time is ticking, to save the oceans that lay on
Our Dear Planet Earth

Reflection
The inspiration for my poem came from research I did about global warming and climate change. I understand better its role in our oceans slowly breaking down, and it helped me express the main concept to be heard. I was naive to the consequential effects that climate change has on the ocean and how it could be hurtful to marine animals and their habitats. I felt a lot of sadness for them because if we tried, we could help the ocean, not hurt it. Then the passion to help the ocean I felt was the innovation for my writing. I have learned a lot through my research concerning climate change’s influence on the future of ocean life, and to not litter or to turn off the light when it’s unnecessary. What gives me hope that the ocean will get better is that many are playing their part to help. They increase awareness and fight to protect the oceans. Like this contest, it’s a great deed that is being done to raise ocean awareness. The actions I will personally take to ensure that I will play my part to help the oceans is to make sure to always be considerate of the amount of energy I use every day. Namely, when brushing my teeth, I won’t let the water run too long. In conclusion, I truly hope that through this poem I can raise ocean awareness. And in my life, I will keep the ocean safe.
