While researching climate change, I came across a spoken word piece titled “Plastic” by Adam Roa. His humorous but passionate work moved me (quite literally). He states, “Place those chemicals into plastic wrappers, placed inside of plastic bags, purchase them with plastic cards, and drive them home with gas-fueled cars. Use it once and then discard.” His message made me think about how much plastic has dominated my life and how much the world around us has become a “throw away” consumerist society. I created a dance to express Roa’s funny passion against plastic debris on lands and oceans; meshing together two different styles, contemporary and hip-hop, helped open a new door of opportunities for me to explore. Through my dance, I attempt to convey a message about how plastic harms our climate and oceans in a humorous way. For example, I laid down with my hands across my chest as Roa said “casket” to convey a literal casket. This project allowed me to expand my knowledge of climate change and express a message through dance, my favorite creative outlet.
