Ocean pollution is the side effect of our daily lives. Every single thing we do or interact with is somehow directly or indirectly related to the use or production of plastic, aluminum, petroleum, glass, etc. The food we eat is packaged using plastic, to make the food packages we need petroleum, and also we drink soda from aluminum cans. If we really want to stop or improve our current situation with ocean pollution, we need to radically change our consumption patterns and adopt new lifestyles. There are alternatives to plastic, aluminum, and glass like recyclable or biodegradable food packaging, and even though sometimes these options are significantly more expensive, those are the way to go.
Currently, it is through education that we can make a difference. From a young age, kids must learn to take care of the environment by making an effort to maintain clean the ocean by recycling. As we grow and form part of society, we must make each other aware of the fact that our oceans are suffering the consequences of our irresponsible actions and encourage others to think first before dumping any trash that will someday end up in the ocean and kill marine life because they will eat the trash or get stuck on it.
I believe that our efforts to clean the ocean today will only go fifty percent along the way. If we don’t eradicate the source of the problem from our lives, the problem will persist forever.
