Reflection

I was inspired to write this piece after researching about ocean acidification for a school project. Before, I was quite ignorant about the human impact on the ocean, other than seeing general information and news about it in social media. But after learning more surprising details about how greatly the ocean is affected by anthropogenic waste and production, I felt really passionate about the topic of protecting our ocean, and I really enjoyed writing this song. I decided to begin my song from the perspective of marine life, as I empathized with those animals whose homes are threatened. Later on, I found it challenging for me to fit everything I learned into a 4 minute song, because there's so many staggering facts and important information about the ocean today. As a teenager, one issue I really wanted to address was this generation’s immersion in social media and technology. I wanted to encourage audiences to take a break from their phones and appreciate the earth, as in my school and life, people's addiction to technology often seems overwhelming and harmful. However, since social media still is a big part of everyone’s lives, I wanted to encourage audiences to use it for a worthy cause, such as spreading ocean awareness. One main purpose of my piece was to convey the critical condition the Earth is in, and its value as our one and only home. Furthermore, I ended my piece with the question "What will you do?", as this piece was also really about directly addressing the audience and making an urgent call to action. I feel that with my generation's knowledge about our oceans and the dire state the Earth is in, it's our decision to act- to protect the oceans and our future.
