When I discovered Marino Morikawa’s story, I was inspired by his sentimental connection to his childhood play space, El Cascajo Lake. When Morikawa found out that his favorite lake was in a disastrous state, he quickly rushed home to Peru. Morikawa states, “The first thing I did was kneel down in the wetlands. When I put my hands on the ground, I felt a heartbeat, a pulse under my hands. ‘You're alive,’ I said, ‘you're not dead like everyone thinks you are.'" With his passion for environmental science, Morikawa utilized nanotechnology and biofilters to remove pollutants from the water, saving the entire lake’s ecosystem. Morikawa’s story resonates with me as I have seen many of my favorite outdoor spaces from childhood get destroyed by pollution and construction. I’m sharing Morikawa’s heartwarming tale to inspire all people to come up with innovative solutions to prevent pollution and the destruction of our environment. Like Morikawa, I am intrigued by the field of environmental science and will be striving toward my goal of reversing man-made disasters and restoring places that people– and wildlife– used to call home.
