Climate Hero: Oluwaseyi Moejoh, U-recycle Initiative
Reflection

“Speech” is an action so simple yet impactful enough to connect people all around the world. One of the main activists in my work, Oluwaseyi Moejoh, is a young 20 year old Nigerian law school student who speaks to the public regarding climate change and ocean preservation issues. Through working together as a community, I hope this art piece connects people of diverse cultures and leads them to realize the importance of ocean awareness through the message of speech since art has the pure power to raise awareness. Oluwaseyi Moejoh is standing on the platform of all kinds of waste which also connects to her organization, the “U Recycle Initiative Africa.” The platform consists of piles of waste and shattered transparent glass which helps look into the ocean and observe the struggles that the marine animals are facing due to the plastic connected chemical pollution. There are mutant fish inside the shattered glass, putting emphasis on the critical issue. Additionally, the platform includes a Nigerian flag and Nigerian tile patterns which connects back to the environmental awareness of the U-recycle Initiatives. Each marine animal in the art piece is either critically endangered or supposedly extinct. In order to ensure the resilience of the marine ecosystem and warn the people, the speaker delivers her important message on the waste pile. While researching the climate heroes hidden under the light, I found out that the collective actions are the ways of protecting the environment as there are several climate heroes making small but impactful efforts to our world. There is no Planet B, we as humans should have the responsibility to keep our one and only earth alive.
