Ocean pollution has been one of the most tragic things I have seen as a part of the Interact Club at my school. Every fall, we visit the Galveston beach and participate in “Adopt-a-Beach,” a community project that brings together high schoolers from around Texas to clean up waste around the shore. But no matter how much time and effort we put in picking up trash from the coastlines, as long as we keep throwing away plastic in the garbage, the toxins and chemicals will continue to accumulate deeper into the ocean. Through the course of my research about plastic pollution, I realized that even I was not doing all I could to recycle my daily used plastic. I did not ever realize how many things can be recycled but are not, such as empty chip and used Ziploc bags. But now, I am more motivated than ever to pay closer attention to the things I throw away in the trash and the impact they could have on the habitat of millions of living creatures. If we can all come to this realization, just imagine how much cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful the oceans would be.
