Climate Hero: Beavers
Reflection
The first time that I saw this prompt, I went straight to researching people who have advocated for climate change and other advocates for combating climate change. However, the more I found, the more I realized that all humans contribute to climate change in some way, although sometimes indirectly. This is when I started broadening my perspective and researching unconventional climate heroes. Due to my avid interest in biology, I was aware of the term 'keystone species,' which refers to certain animals or plants crucial for an ecosystem's survival. Without these keystone species, the whole community falls apart as everything loses its balance. These keystone species were the heroes in disguise, fighting to fix the ecosystem that we humans have so brutally broken apart. Beavers support not only the land animals they coexist with but also the marine life, as well as many birds and plants which also benefit from the existence of the beaver. Their incredible ability to build dams and collaborate to support an entire ecosystem was so mind-blowing to me, and a very fitting image for a hero. I have truly felt that we should be protecting these animals at the very least and supporting them in as many ways as we can to sustain our ecosystem. Because, unlike humans, animals lack vices, they do not profit off of destroying the planet, they are the only ones truly trustworthy to save our planet, as Climate Heroes should.
