My piece shows child activist Greta Thunberg, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Sweden who advocates for the future of earth. She inspires me every day, so I knew I had to draw her for this contest. I based the background off multiple charts showing the temperature of our oceans. Reefs are believed to have the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem, maybe even more than tropical rainforests. When water temperatures rise even by a degree or two. corals start to bleach. They turn white and eventually die. When the corals die, homes for a multitude of creatures are lost, resulting in the loss of biodiversity and eventually many species in that reef. When those species die, especially any that help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the earth, we lose a natural defender against global warming. I hope to one day raise awareness for the rapid destruction of our oceans and help stop it before it’s too late.
