A Flawed World

The altering seas
calmly leaving a trail of life
animals floating in peace.
Many problems, one cause, one effect.
Mother nature ravaged
from these never-ending years,
which becomes the problem.
People, humans, adults, kids, mistakes,
are the cause.
What is the source of this destructive plan?
Cars, motorcycles, buses clamor together
The rhythm continues
like a beating drum.
A gas tiptoeing in the air
as if it were a ballerina.
Oxygen is abandoned in a deserted island
while carbon dioxide roams the streets,
like bandits prepared to attack.
We carelessly drop a piece of plastic,
But we never realize where it goes.
The wind drags the trash to the water.
It follows the path of a current,
for thousands of years.
Oil enters the water,
polluting the homes of animals.
We are blinded from this,
but this is the beginning of the end.
Beginning in the poles, the top of the globe,
the life of the glacier gets taken away.
The peaceful waves turn bitter,
gradually but effectively rising,
slaughtering homes.
Sea turtles, walruses, seals, polar bears sob
Sharing tears in silent.
For their voice is not heard.
This is the effect.
And yet we still need to try harder,
in this flawed world.

Reflection
One of the things that I most worry about is climate change. When I see a beach or a park, I sometimes cringe by looking at all the trash I see. Plastic bottles, bags, and more are found everywhere. It’s not difficult to put a plastic bottle in the recycling bin. What is hard, however, is maintaining that for the rest of your life. People tend to forget where one plastic bottle may end up. It’s not like we can deny that this is happening and ignore our biggest threat. I was inspired by this problem to write a poem discussing three important things: the problem, the cause, and the effect. If people see the reality of our world, they will start to change. Even if it is one small deed. I have learned through these recent weeks that small things make a great impact. If that means picking up trash in the park, remembering to recycle, or reducing using plastic, then it won’t be difficult. If everybody did one small thing to change the world, it could change our lives. One of my favorite quotes, by Ban Ki-moon, says, “Saving our planet, lifting people out of poverty, advancing economic growth... these are one and the same fight. We must connect the dots between climate change, water scarcity, energy shortages, global health, food security, and women’s empowerment. Solutions to one problem must be solutions for all.” After writing this poem, I realize I need to do my part. By doing my part, I can help our home.
