A Naysayer’s Lament
Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka
2022, Junior, Poetry & Spoken Word
The drought that comes to scorch the ground,
the ice caps that melt and float around,
do not merit our attention,
for there is no such thing as pollution!
The air we breathe is free of smog.
We do not cut trees. We just fell logs.
The ozone layer is the way it always was. G
lobal warming is a mythical cause!
Our waterways are clean and crystal clear.
The toxins we release magically disappear
down the ocean’s carbon sink.
Climate change is not as grave as you think.
So, let’s not change our ways, words, or deeds.
Let’s only fulfill our immediate needs.
The future is not ours to find a solution.
Let the next generation cope with pollution!

The magnitude of climate change often baffles me. However, I am aware that many people still fail to acknowledge its very existence. Nevertheless, I believe that if we are to make a real dent in our fight against global warming, we need to come together as one. An impactful way of doing so is through the arts, for it makes learning about climate change entertaining as well as informative. Therefore, I have begun to advocate for climate change through my writing, songs, and acting.
