In moments of boredom, I often find myself drawn to the educational videos on TED-Ed's YouTube channel. These videos tell the tale of the planet’s past, present, and future. The more I progressed in my work, the more I was inspired and intrigued by the changing climate. At the same time, I was reminded of how related the problem is to our daily lives and how time is always moving — there is no way to stop it. This is exactly what I tried to express in my art piece. Time is running out; the global temperature isn’t getting any lower; and the water level will keep rising unless we as humans, the most sophisticated animals on Earth, do something about it. At this rate, the earth will face catastrophe. It is predicted that if nothing changes, by 2100 the planet will have warmed up by more than 2 degrees Celsius. The drastic temperature will have melted half of the remaining glaciers. Along with increasing volume of the water due to thermal expansion, the sea level will elevate by more than a meter. Some places, like southern Africa, will experience longer, more frequent, and more severe droughts; while others, like the Philippines, will face heavier rainfall, often leading to flooding. This not only impacts humans, it affects every living thing on the planet, making it our responsibility to keep Earth safe. I will continue to support already existing programs who share the same goal as me, because adding onto another’s impact will help the planet and telling my story to get others to do the same will add up, little by little, just like sand falling in an hourglass.
