Climate Hero: Elizabeth Wathuti, Green Generation Initiative
Reflection
I have always loved poetry, as I feel like it is a medium where I can express myself and my emotions without strict restrictions. Language and its complexity can be so powerful in spreading meaning; in history, writing has been the catalyst for change in so many instances, and as I create I also often find myself immersed in the message I am communicating. Throughout my research for this poem, I was fascinated and inspired by the work of Elizabeth Wathuti. I find that often, climate discussions center on the negative aspects; however, Elizabeth worked with others in her community to create positive change through planting trees, restoring life to the environment, and teaching the future generation of youth how to continue those beneficial practices. I will certainly implement the ideas she has brought forth in my own community now—her efforts make me hopeful that through education, action, and connection, the next generation can undo much of the harm that has been dealt to Mother Nature.
