Last year in my science class, I was taught about climate change and its effect on the natural world. One of the subjects we learned about was how climate change is impacting coral reefs. I had never known how vital coral reefs are to the ocean’s ecosystem, or how quickly coral reefs are dying because humans are ruining the planet. There is, however, some hope for coral reefs, in the form of coral farming. When split into tiny pieces, coral actually grows a lot faster than it normally would. In coral farming, tiny pieces of coral are put into a suitable living environment, where they can grow. Once they are big enough, they are put back into a suffering reef. I wanted to shed light on the coral crisis our oceans are facing in a way that would cause viewers to care for the coral. This is why I included a cute “baby coral” in the video. Because of coral farming’s great potential, it is possible that coral has a fighting chance. However, hopefully people will see that we all need to do our part to solve the underlying issue of climate change. Among other things, I will be more conscious of the amount of trash I am generating, avoid driving when necessary, and continue to live a vegetarian lifestyle, hopefully becoming vegan in the future. I will also be an advocate for reef safe sunscreen.
