Sink or Rise?

Reflection
If our cities are underwater, will human sink along or raise up? This piece of digital art discusses the question of “Rise or Sink.” Inspired by the film Ponyo by Hayao Miyazaki, my work explores serious issues comically in a similar way. The sight is absurd, with people fishing, singing, enjoying their time while the world submerges. The twilight, enveloping the remaining, presages the end like of that in Ragnarök. By using black humor as a provoking trigger, the image actuates audiences to reconsider this imminent disaster and the future of humanity. The solution is indicated in the background — only unity and support can sustain our future. During the progress of creating, I experienced diverse emotions — the heaviness of drawing the rooftop; the urgency when outlining the drowning individuals; fear while glazing the sunlight; reassurance when characters offer support; hope when shading the helicopter; confidence as people starts to gather and unite.
