Climate Hero: Erin Pettit, Oregon State University
Reflection
Recently, a new science has been created, using bubbles created by melting glaciers to get more information about the ice in general. Glaciologist Erin Pettit and her team are using this new science to study animals affected by glaciers in ways we couldn’t even imagine before. She is proving that the ripple effect of melting glaciers has a wider span than just rising sea levels and increased erosion. There is more to the story going on under the water. She and her team have proven that the undersides of ice produce so many bubbles it makes them one of the loudest places in the ocean, and thus provide a place of refuge for baby seals against hungry whales who dislike the loud noises. My art’s aim is to show that while the climate crisis is getting worse everyday, our solutions are improving rapidly. It's to give hope for the future while reminding us that we all need to do something, because no attempts are futile. This art honors everyday climate heroes.
