When I was asked to create a sculpture that was created out of many of one object, there were a lot of directions I could have gone. I thought of plastic spoons because I think of the trash I see that has been tossed into the environment and I think about how a sculpture could be made just out of the litter you can find in the road, on the sidewalk, in your yard, or even from the ocean. I remember seeing images of huge collections of floating trash sitting on the surface of the water, and how the whole food chain was disturbed because the plankton near the surface were suffering. I used plastic spoons because I thought it embodied the waste and the mass amounts of litter, but I then turned around the negativity of what the spoons first reminded me of and made it into something that meant more to me. Sharks in general are my favorite ocean animal, and I liked the fact that I could take something ugly like trash and use it to represent this animal that needs to be protected from it.
