Whether or not you’re a fan of superheroes, everyone wishes they could have the power to change the world. I believe what holds us back from being this inner superhero is self doubt, the belief that we can’t do enough to make a difference. My art piece strives to inspire the superhero within all of us by presenting the connection between our carbon footprint and nature. I’ve drawn a woman representing today’s youth, blatantly believing that we can change our collective impact. Inspired by the stance Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s character “Clark Kent” takes in the infamous comic books Superman, I drew a woman revealing her own identity from a hazmat suit. Through this art, I learned about the chemistry behind ocean acidification. After this project I want to look into programs in my community working to heal our coral reefs.
