Whale Song
Senaida Ng
Thornhill, Canada
2020, Senior, Performing Arts

I saw a storm in the distance
It was calling out my name.
I saw my whale friends too,
They were sitting by the bay.

Breathe in the foul gasoline
Breathe out the rain.
Breathe in the saltwater
Breathe out the pain.

Listen to the whale songs
(I hear them singing)
Listen to the whale songs
(I see them dancing)
Listen to the whale songs
(Woah)
Listen to the whale songs.

Feet on the beach,
Sand in my hair.
Sky painted pink,
We used to love it there.

I almost think
That the world is getting better,
But Mother Earth still needs us
We haven’t gotten there.

Breathe in the foul gasoline
Breathe out the rain.
Breathe in the saltwater
Breathe out the pain.

Listen to the whale songs
(I hear them singing)
Listen to the whale songs
(I see them dancing)
Listen to the whale songs
(Woah)
Listen to the whale songs.

Reflection
Reflection

“Whale Song” is inspired by the ambient noises that whales use to communicate with each other. When I was researching for this project, I listened to various whale songs and I was captivated by just how beautiful and magical the sounds were. I think there is something very unique and pure about beauty in nature, and whale songs are one of those hidden gems. The message behind “Whale Song” is to notice and listen to the beauty of nature all around us, and help protect it. Throughout the song, the listener can hear real whales communicating with each other taken from a recording by the Oceania Project. Six out of thirteen great whale species are endangered or vulnerable and if we don’t act now to save them, they may go extinct forever. Climate change significantly affects whales because it impacts their migration patterns, causes more stress on their metabolisms and affects the krill population, which is a main source of food for whales. As a global citizen, we must all work together to slow down climate change and save the whales. Some simple ways to get involved include donating to causes such as the WWF, Oceana or PacWhale and volunteering to help clean up beaches and oceans. Art is a powerful tool that can raise awareness about issues like these and I have hope that we can restore the Earth to its former beauty.
