Tips to Reduce Your Plastic Footprint

BYOB(ag)

Plastic bags are often used for minutes before being discarded, ending up in landfills or in the environment as toxic pollution. Massachusetts is at the forefront of the movement to limit or ban thin plastic bags, but you don’t have to wait for a ban to make a change. Bring a reusable bag with you on every trip to the store.

Refill Not Landfill

Bottled water is resource-intensive to produce and expensive. And for every five water bottles we use, only one makes it to the recycling bin. Get yourself a reusable stainless steel or glass bottle.

Rethink “To Go”

From takeout to coffee, make sure you bring your own reusable containers to cut down on unnecessary and short-lived consumption of plastic packaging.

Say No to Straws

500 million straws are used and discarded every day in the U.S. alone. Lightweight straws that find their way into the ocean will float, slowly breaking down by sunlight and wave action into smaller and smaller pieces that eventually end up as unnatural, toxic additions to the marine food chain.

Get Active

Support groups like Surfrider and 5 Gyres, who work for plastic-free oceans through community engagement and responsible policy advocacy.
