Bow Seat Receives a $10,000 Grant from the Horne Family Foundation
August 11, 2021

(Boston, MA) – For the second consecutive year, Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs (Bow Seat) has received a grant from the Horne Family Foundation in support of our mission to engage youth in ocean conservation and advocacy through the arts.

The grant will provide valuable operating support for Bow Seat to expand our work in educating students about critical environmental issues and empowering them to be creative stewards of our blue planet—priorities that Bow Seat shares with the Horne Family Foundation.

Bow Seat’s flagship educational program, the annual Ocean Awareness Contest, invites middle and high schoolers to explore the connections between human activities and the health of our ocean through visual and performing arts, writing, film, and multimedia. With themes such as climate change, plastic pollution, and water inequality, the Contest has been at the forefront of introducing critical environmental issues to youth. More than 24,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and 134 countries have participated, and Bow Seat has awarded Contest winners over $487,000 in scholarships.

In addition, Bow Seat showcases student work in our online gallery, and through social media, exhibitions, film screenings, publications, and partner initiatives. This provides a special opportunity for teens to display their individual creative skills while demonstrating the strength of their collective voices, bringing awareness of environmental issues to wider audiences. Bow Seat also collaborates with schools and community organizations to combine ocean literacy and the arts in classrooms and afterschool programs, and to ensure that youth voice is included in environmental campaigns and conversations.

“We have been so appreciative of the Horne Family Foundation’s generous support, especially over the past two difficult years,” said Linda Cabot, founder and president of Bow Seat. “As we look ahead to continued challenges and new opportunities, we remain committed to working towards our mutual goals of uplifting diverse youth voices and engaging them in actively participating in environmental solutions.”
