The Alumni Spotlight Series is a celebration of Bow Seat’s alumni as they continue to make waves in the world. This series aims to highlight their journeys, showcase their creative and environmental work, and inspire our Bow Seat community with stories of impact and growth. Readers can expect monthly insightful interviews, personal reflections, and updates on how these young changemakers are using art, advocacy, and innovation to shape a more sustainable future.
Cynthia Zhang is a 17-year-old from Long Island, New York. Her skills range from creating evocative ocean-themed art to mentoring young changemakers and leading amazing environmental projects. Her journey with Bow Seat is a testament to the power of youth-driven environmental advocacy.
Cynthia first became a part of the Bow Seat community as a participant in the Ocean Awareness Contest, where her compelling creative work not only earned her an award but also resonated deeply with environmental justice themes. Her film in the 2023 Ocean Awareness Contest captured the urgency of ocean conservation while offering a hopeful vision for the future.
As a young and ambitious leader, Cynthia’s impact didn’t stop at a single submission. She went on to become one of the 2024 True Blue Fellowship grantees with her outstanding project “Monarchs Matter”. In 2025, she switched from being a mentee to a mentor. This is just one of her many roles as a new member of the Fellow Blue Youth Council.
Outside of Bow Seat, Cynthia continues to blend environmental science, social impact, and creativity in her work. She does this through independent initiatives, internships, and mentoring other young artists and advocates.
Cynthia Zhang’s story is one of growth, grit, and inspiration for youth in conservation. We are proud to spotlight her as an alumna who reminds us that real change begins when we combine our passions with purpose.
