Covering over seventy percent of Earth, the ocean is one of our planet's key characteristics. Besides taking up a significant portion of our planet, the ocean plays an important role in the functioning of our planet. The ocean provides more than 70 percent of the Earth’s oxygen, regulates our climate, and houses a diverse ecosystem. Despite the ocean’s importance, in today’s day and age, the ocean is facing catastrophic changes due to humans' disregard for its health. Our ocean that was once crystal clear is now characterized by mountains of plastic waste, oil plagued regions, and destroyed ecosystems. The disregard for the health of our ocean drove me to bring awareness to this issue through this art piece. In my artwork, I display the physical embodiment of what it means to care for our ocean. The dark and gloomy background signifies the threat that human society poses to the ocean. The diver in the piece represents the protection that we should be giving to the ocean. The lone diver's effort to protect the animals outshines the looming darkness in the background. While trying to conserve the ocean may seem like a daunting task, humans can make a change one conservationist at a time.
