Reflection
According to NASA, only about 1/3 of people around the world live within 60 miles of the ocean coast. Sadly, this means that 5.5 billion people don't have direct access to the ocean. At this point I knew I wanted people to feel connected with the body of water that covers about 70% of the Earth. I was scrolling through articles, clicking through a rabbit hole as one thing led to another, until I found a National Geographic article about the Mariana Trench...and the plastic bag discovered there. I learned that plastic in ocean heightens climate change by 1. releasing greenhouse gasses in the process of breaking down, and 2. choking animals and plants to death, lessening the amount of carbon dioxide organisms can absorb. I decided I wanted the audience to see an anglerfish, mouth wide open, about to ingest a broken lightbulb. The anglerfish's special feature is a light hanging off of its head, but when it meets another lightbulb, it's stumped... Hopefully, after seeing this art piece audience will feel more connected to the great oceans and be compelled to help us save our beautiful earth.
