Ocean Guardians
Tokyo, Japan
2024, Junior, Interactive & Multimedia
Project Description: How to Play: To start, shuffle all of the cards and distribute 3 of them to each player. Put the rest of the cards in the centre of the table, face down. Next to the deck is the discard pile, place the cards facing upwards and replace them with the deck when it runs over. Progression of the game: You can make one action per turn. Play one card and put it in the discard pile. (You can use various cards to make a healthy ocean or sabotage your opponents from getting a healthy ocean.) Discard up to 3 cards that you have in your hand. After this draw a card until you have 3 in your hand and move to the next person. End of the game: The player who gets all four of the “Main cards” that are not influenced by the “Problem cards” will be the winner of the game.
Reflection
We wanted to create something that we and others like us can enjoy. We’ve tried various different ideas, such as comics, animations, and board games; however, we couldn’t come up with anything that felt possible until we got inspiration from one card game that we played in PE class called “VSウイルス!”. It was about the human body and trying to make everything healthy. We thought it would be a great game concept for us to turn it into a card game about the sea. The creative process was very challenging and fun. We had no prior experience making any card games or anything close to it, so we had to try different designs and rules until we got something that we’re satisfied with. In the end, we think it turned out way better than we expected. We don’t want this to be a game for very educated people, but a game for younger kids to be introduced to the ideas of environmental problems while having some fun. We don’t want kids to have a boring image about environmental problems, but rather a collaborative, interactive, and fulfilling image. We made something that we quite enjoyed, and hope that you guys will also enjoy this little game.
