The rapidly declining population of the North Atlantic right whale is a sad, but true reality. The circumstances of the whale inspired me to create this piece. One of the many threats to the whale stems from the entanglement of fishing lines and sudden vessel strikes. Almost 85% of the North Atlantic right whales are left with scars due to the entanglement of fishing gear. Further, migration patterns are also heavily affected by vessel strikes. I added both elements to demonstrate that what we are doing to the ocean has heavily affected the well-being of the North Atlantic right whale. The girl holding her hands to protect the whale symbolizes the positive effect that we could have on our environment, provided that we treat the ocean in a more environmentally friendly way. It shows that if we protect the ocean’s habitats, then endangered animals including the northern right whale, would survive and flourish in the future.
