From providing habitats for thousands of marine species to protecting coastlines from waves and storms, coral reefs play a huge role in not only marine life but our lives as well. However, due to human activities such as coral mining, pollution, and overfishing, coral reefs are slowly dying all around the world. Through my piece, I wanted to show how important it is that we save these corals because not only are they beautiful, but they provide life as well. To do so, I contrasted the brightness and liveliness of the healthy corals by painting it in bright red colors and surrounding it with life to the decaying, bleached corals. While the lifeless corals surround the girl, who represents the ocean, the remaining healthy corals are limited to only a few that lay in the palms of her hands. I did this to show how hope for the corals is still within reach as long as precautions are taken to preserve these precious reefs. I hope that through this piece, I can move someone out there to take action for coral reefs before they completely die out.
