My piece, “Surrounded By Mankind,” addresses the threat that human-caused climate change poses to coral reefs. Coral reefs are home to more than 20% of marine life and play a major role in keeping marine environments healthy. Unfortunately, even a slight rise in temperature can cause the coral to begin bleaching, which can lead to its death. I created this piece using wax-based colored pencils and a black fine liner. The bubble of ocean represents the coral reefs and marine life in the ocean. The hands reaching for the bubble show how close mankind is to popping that bubble by causing climate change and pollution. While researching this project, I learned about how crucial coral reefs are to marine life. Learning about the effects of climate change on coral reefs and the ocean has made me more conscious of where my waste is going and what my actions cause to the environment around me.
