Fearful Ocean

She was afraid of me
Of my creatures that would soon be history Afraid that I’d take her life
Not knowing that she was the one holding the knife
Unable to see
My fear of the ocean
Fear of what she’d done to me
Hoping she’d open her eyes
Wishing for her to hear my screams
Knowing that someday
She would finally think of me
Barely intentional
Yet without caution
She decorated my plastic coffin
All her careless actions
Even when discrete
brought me closer to defeat
I screamed to her
Graced her feet
Gifted her with a token,
A bottle nearly broken
Hoping that our eyes would meet
And in that moment
Though it was brief,
Her eyes opened in disbelief
Once scared for her life
Now fearing the loss of mine
Promising to conserve me this time
If you open your eyes
Perhaps on the count of three
I advise that you brace yourself, for what you will see Bruised waters
No longer filled with glee
Press a shell against your ear
Think about my fears
And you might be able to save me
Reflection
I realized that members of society tend to neglect climate change as a result of being a stranger to the entirety and urgency of the issue. With this in mind, I wanted my poem to have its audience sympathize over our oceans and the issues they are constantly enduring; maybe a sense of remorse would inspire them to expand their knowledge on what our world is becoming and how they can help repair it. I strongly believe that to adequately solve a major issue, one must understand, or at least become interested in understanding, the subject as a whole, and organizations like Bow Seat allow people to do just that. This organization, along with many other ocean awareness programs, give me hope for our seas because they allow me to hear the thoughts and beliefs of countless individuals who are equally passionate about eliminating marine pollution and climate change, while also presenting me with opportunities to educate myself and those around me on effective solutions. Upon informing myself on the ocean crisis and ways to improve the futures of bodies of water, I will ensure that I continue to educate myself on all aspects of the ocean because I now know that ignoring the issue makes you a part of it.
