We are living in the 21st century, where freedom of speech should be accessible to anyone; although some people still challenge me into believing otherwise. I reside in the Philippines, and amidst the pandemic, our government shut down one of the biggest news media outlets. This had me in shock and in anger, because instead of focusing on a bigger crisis, they chose to kill off an important outlet for mass media in our country. I want people to realize that the ocean is calling for our help, and that having mass media and freedom of speech is what we need in order to have hope. Around the world, there are people and groups giving it their all to help spread awareness that the Earth is in danger. Greta Thunberg, a teenage activist, has been fighting about the pressing issues the environment is encountering right now. She is doing whatever she can, yet there are still people out there criticizing her and telling her to stay in her "place" as a teenager. If we value freedom of speech, why do we keep shutting people down when they try to speak their truth? The power people have in showing their awareness and fighting to make a difference is why I am still hopeful for my generation. In order for me to speak my truth, I have to spread awareness through my art, my platform, and by overall just being woke about current situations.
