Local artists, environmental advocates, and Maine-based nature enthusiasts have joined forces with the New England Aquarium’s Right Whale Research team to host an art show and panel discussion on the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale.

Each summer, right whales swim right by Maine beaches as they migrate up to the Gulf of Maine. Whale watches sometimes even see these endangered animals swimming at the surface or feeding on plankton. To protect this endangered species, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) is in the process of coming up with a set of rules that New England-based fisheries must follow in order to keep the right whales safe, because fishing gear entanglements serve as the primary cause of fatalities.

The pop-up art show, featuring student winners of the Healthy Whale, Healthy Ocean Challenge, and Q&A aims to educate the public and offers attendees the opportunity to urge NOAA to put the strongest rules in place to protect this incredible species.

Speakers: Amy Warren, Right Whale Research Assistant, New England Aquarium; Emily Green, Senior Attorney, Conservation Law Foundation; Michaela Morris, Oceans Associate, Environment Maine
